Off topic but loved your last YouTube video. So relaxing and beautifully shot. Had a little trouble with the small captioning but realize at my advanced age of 74 (!) other younger eyes won’t have that problem. Don’t know if you have done the deep dive into Asian “a day in the life videos” like Hige and Watashi but after a stressful day and all the world news it’s very nice to see something calming and beautiful. Thank you.
SO relatable! I went through a weird phase at 38, thinking of myself as “older.” Thinking after 40 I’d have to keep my hair shorter for some reason. Now I’m 48, and my daughter’s 23 and we dress similarly. When my mom was my age, she wore pant suits to the office and sweatshirts with bird feeders on the weekend.
My daughter works at a clothing boutique and people from a wide age range shop there. Mothers and teen daughters come in buying similar clothing. To me, it does seem like a cultural shift, rather than a personal one. And it’s wild seeing my daughter dressing almost the same as when I was the her age, wearing pieces from her latest thrifting haul.
I don’t really see a downside. Though, I kind of liked rebelling when I was young, wearing something my parents would never wear. But I also think the mixing of people from different age groups feels more natural — and interesting.
One of the biggest fashion changes post-pandemic that I've noticed is a shift towards wearing what makes one feel good vs what the fashion dictators says is chic. Hallelujah! I mean, let's not even get into the over arching business issue of an ever-changing fashion cycle forcing consumers to continually buy new clothes! I love that my daughter wears whatever she feels is comfy without a whole lot of regard for what's in. Right now for her, it's baggy, high waisted jeans and secretly I'm relieved it's not the super low, g-string revealing waists of the 2000's.
Very fun to hear your thoughts. I was just thinking about my clothing choices today, and how I want to tilt them closer to play than style (maybe that’s style??). I’ve ignored my clothing for most of my life, and I think I’d like to change that now that I have a bit more time on my hands. I generally hate shopping, but I love second-hand shopping. Good clothes that are affordable, a little treasure hunt, and fun to think they are getting a second chance.
This was a fun read! I just google imaged the same query for 40 (because that’s my age) and guess what?! It’s the same shit! It’s 50 shades of beige, both clothing colors and skin tones. Wear what you want, screw the “rules.”
I unfortunately never have had “fashion sense.” Until I went to college I just wore what my mother and cousin bought for me. It’s safe to say that I didn’t care what I wore, but I also grew up in a different climate so was able to wear mostly shorts all year round. Then I lived in Austin TX for a few months and found myself having to dress for a different climate so, for example, I got my very first winter coat at age 20. Other people in my training group influenced me as I adjusted my wardrobe and I started looking a little preppy. But when I started raising a family, early ‘70’s, I slid quickly into jeans and tee shirts all the time. And that’s where I still am. If I try to dress up at all it doesn’t feel right, so I try to just have dress-up jeans in case I go anywhere special. I see other women my age who dress really nicely without having to get “dressed up.” I wouldn’t mind having some of their fashion sense but am resigned to my current choices.
Can I wear this? What is age-appropriate fashion anymore?

I’m more dismayed by the fact that AI gives such nonsense responses. There is no ‘there’ there.

The lack of diversity is shocking, just ridiculous really, am thinking this AI business has a long way to go.
